Former Minister of Women Affairs, Hajia Inna Ciroma on Tuesday said personal interest of party leaders are destroying the People's Democratic Party (PDP).

Ciroma who spoke at an event by PDP Rescue Mission International in Abuja regretted that “People's interest have overtaken the interest of the party, and the interest of Nigeria.”

New Telegraph had earlier reported that the opposition party has fixed its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which was held last in May 2022, this Thursday.

But Ciroma who was former National Woman Leader of PDP, stated that the basis for the formation of PDP has crashed, noting that the party was formed with the belief that Nigeria needs a united a party.

“That's why our symbol is umbrella. The people that started this party were very passionate about democracy; they stood and fought the military to ensure that Nigeria returns to democracy.

“Personal interest of our leaders have destroyed this party completely. The elites are to be blamed because for us, we benefited from the governments of yesterday.

“But today, is government providing that to Nigerians especially young people? No, they are not,” he added.

Hajia Ciroma wants members of the party to return to the basis on why the PDP was formed, adding, “It is not about personal interest but about rescuing Nigeria; it is about returning to proper democracy, it is about development and progress of our country.”

The former minister stated that Nigeria is not practising democracy the way it is done in other countries, and called on political elites to stand up and look at this issue of democracy in Nigeria.

She noted that in other countries, democracy is like religion, “But here in Nigeria we have thrown democracy away. We are not talking of fairness; we are not talking of justice in our party.”

“So, my call to all of us especially those in PDP is to go back to the basis and look at the reasons for the formation of this party.”

Director General of PDP Rescue Mission International Vik-Morrow Ulo, called on the PDP NEC members to respect the party's constitution, and end the tenure of Ambassador Umar Damagum as PDP acting National Chairman.

He said Nigerians are anxiously waiting to see if the PDP NEC meeting would allow democracy to flourish in the country, adding, “there is currently no opposition democracy (in Nigeria)… it is only PDP that can give Nigerians such experience.”
