An umbrella body of Igbo leaders in Lagos State, Council of Ndieze Lagos State, has debunk the rumours making rounds that there are two factions of leadership of the apex Igbo body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, in Lagos State. This was disclosed by Eze Ndigbo Ikosi/Isheri, Eze Remi Anyamele, who also doubles as the Secretary General, Council of Ndieze Lagos State, and Eze Nicholas Njoku, Eze Ndigbo of Ejigbo, at a press conference in Lagos.

The duo said there can never be two presidents of the Igbo apex body because the single term of four years tenure of office for the erstwhile chairman of the organization in Lagos State, Chief Solomon Aguene, has ended and the constitution of Ohaneze Ndigbo does not allow tenure elongation for any position whatsoever.

“There is only one Ohaneze Ndigbo chairmanship in Lagos, which is under the leadership of Chief Sunday Ossai,” the group said, noting that Chief Aguene, who still parades himself as the leader of the organisation in Lagos State is undemocratic.

“The action of the erstwhile president can be alluded to the sit-tight syndrome synonymous to African leaders,” Anyamele and Njoku said. While enjoining Ndigbo in Lagos to fight against this trend in its totality as it contradicts the concept of continuity, they also debunked the claim made by Aguene as the only person who has the consent of court, which he obtained through an ex parte injunction to lead.

“The consent of court cannot be binding on Ohaneze because Igbos don't rule through the court but utilize the appropriate channels of conflict resolution, which entails the people and their heads coming to an agreement through dialogue,” they said, while noting that the election that brought Aguene to office was never through the court.

Also speaking, Chief Mike Orji, Chairman of Chairmen, Ohaneze Ndigbo Lagos State; Chief Everest Ozonweke, South-West Coordinator of Ohaneze Ndigbo and Chief Robert Obasi, Secretary General, Ohaneze Ndigbo, Lagos State chapter, who pledged their unalloyed allegiance to the leadership of Chief Ossai, said the Ime Obi, the highest organ of the apex Igbo body has endorsed Ossai.

According to them, Chief Ossai's legitimacy as president of the organisation in Lagos is hinged on the fact that the President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who took up the mantle of leadership after the death of the former President General, late Prof. George Obiozor, has been to Lagos on more than two occasions to confirm Chief Ossai as president of the group in the state.

They further questioned the rationale behind the International Peace Ambassador award that was given to Chief Aguene, who they claimed has succeeded in dividing the panIgbo social cultural organization, which brought about his removal from office.
